I'm not an expert but from what I've read, solar panels on car roofs don't work for several reasons.
Firstly. Even the best solar panels available today cannot generate enough power to be self sufficient for a car to run on. Not even close. Yes there are concept cars but you'll notice those are all oddly shaped (huge roof for a tiny car with hardly any space for people or storage), and they don't really work in real world settings.
Secondly. Solar panels are very heavy. Putting such a huge weight at the top of the car is not good.
Thirdly. While solar panels may help extend the range of an EV, the amount of extra range it provides is not worth the extra cost, nor the design compromise of having a top-heavy car.
Lastly. Unless you live in a climate where you have sunny days most of year, there will be many days where the solar panel is nothing but dead weight that is placed in the worst position on the car.
