Hamilton could have won but he didn't have Max's luck! He was gaining on Max with his hard tires, so Max decided to pit and changed into soft for the balance of 10+ laps.
Entering the pit, changed tires, then came out would mean losing 20+", but then VSC (Virtual Safety Car) appeared due to Bottas stopping on the start/finish straight. All cars must slow down & then bunched up, so Max gained 20+".
Max'x (RB) car was faster than MBs, so Max overtook Russel who was 2nd at that time with soft tires, then easily passed Hamilton who was on hard.
Bottom line, better be lucky than good!
It was fairly similar to the final race of 2021, Max pitted for fresh tires, Hamilton did not. When Max came out, he was far behind with only 5 laps to finish in 6th (?), Hamilton was in first with 3 to four tail-enders in between. Then Safety Car appeared, all cars must follow Hamilton the leading car. From 20+" behind, all cars bunched up.
Then out of the blue, that STUPID Race Director decided to release ALL the lapped cars between Hamilton (on worn tires) & Max (on fresh tires), so Max easily passed Hamilton whe the race resumed, to win the Race & the Championship.
The Chief Steward wanted a sensational finish for the final race of 2021, but it was not even a fair fight. That's why there were so much controversy after the Race. Anyway, in my books, Max DID NOT win the 2021 Drivers Championship. He won because of a stupid Chief Race Director who was subsequently "sacked" as a result of creating an unfair race.
