Yes highly recommend winter tires. Reason is because All Season tires rubber becomes hard below ~7C. While winter tire rubber remains soft hence better grip. That why in races you see them warm up the tires by going a few laps or doing a burn out, to soften the rubber hence more grip.
You can try a little experiment. Take a pencil eraser and just run it along the table and feels it's grip. Now put in in the freezer for a while and run it again. Now warm up the eraser by rubbing it constantly against the table and not feel the grip.
You will understand why snow tires work.
For those who have snow tires, let your insurance company know. They give you a slight discount on your premium for it, another reason to get one if you don't.
I believe it's mandatory to have snow tires in Quebec.
