By a narrow margin, the "leaves" won, and the "stays" lost.
The sticking point was immigration. Influx of immigrants diluted the country's welfare and toke away some employment opportunities, so more young people voted in favour of an exit, enabling Britain to regain control over its affairs.
PM David Cameron immediately resigned. A right move since he promoted "stay", the result of the referendum was a slap on his face.
Britain has to submit a "formal resignation" from EU, then negotiate various new relations as a non-member. All these will take months!
US will have less support in voicing its opinion on European affairs as Britain, a strong US ally, will not be a member anymore.
This could well be the beginning of the end of EU!
Putin is smiling all the way to the bank!
