“FPGAs. Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are types of integrated circuits with programmable hardware fabric. This differs from graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs) in that the function circuitry inside an FPGA processor is not hard etched.”
The real money to be made in CPU market is not consumer side. It business applications like servers and third party vendor like for gaming consoles.
So far AMD has muscled their way into gaming console and other third party application. Also, winning back share of server market. This Xilinx acquisition shows they are doubling down on their winning strategy.
Though Intel is finally waking up from its easy ride and actually bringing in innovation into its chips, and also upping their bribe budget most likely

Yes Intel is late this time. It's prime time has past and they deserve it IMO. They have been easy riding for so long without real competition and they have been hesitating of releasing much better products.
