Fair did something similar when I asked about her heritage.  She said she came to Canada when she was around 10 yo.  When I asked her about sushi and sashimi she really seemed lost when I was using the Japanese names for the fish.  It made me think she's definitely not full Japanese since a native sushi would know this type of stuff.
